August 28th – September 4th

Perhaps you’ve heard about the annual festival in Aarhus. Every year artists, businesses and citizens collaborate in creating a giant culture event. This year’s theme is: The Future is Near!

For a lot of people the festival is just one more excuse to go out drinking, but it’s really a shame, because a lot of fun stuff is packed into the programme each year. The problem is with so much going on it can be hard to decide what to see. If you want to avoid the numourous overcrowded beer tents packed with drunk middle-aged dads and moms dancing to horrid cover bands, here’s a couple of suggestions:

Smells Like Teens
Small music festival with young Danish artists: ambient wonderkid Mike Sheridan, electro-rockers When Saints Go Machine and the club-popper Medina stand out as the most interesting. Price: Free

Present Aarhus
Another music festival featuring more well-known names, both Danish and international. Recommended: indie bedroom musician Mikael Simpson, DJ Kjeld Tolstrup and reggae/dub act Bikstok Røgsystem. Price: 7 EUR per day.

E45 – Road Art
E45 – Road Art is an art exhibiton by the Danish artist Papfar (Papfar means cardboard daddy, which is slang for stepfather). For this exhibition Papfar travelled along the European highway E45 and collected cardboard and trash from the roadside, which he turned into sculptures and paintings. Price: Free

Ice Kicking World Cup
The concept is simple: 40 participants compete in kicking 1 liter of vanilla ice cream as far as possible. Price: Free

Paul Foot
The excentric British stand up comedian, Paul Foot, who won the BBC New Comedy Award performs three nights during the Aarhus Festival. Price: 17 EUR

Very cosy café unlike any other in Aarhus. Café Mozart offers simple, homecooked food with an ethnic twist at very reasonable prices – and has nice selection of good organic beers as well. The café has wonderful laid back vibe and very friendly owner. And more often than not Leonard Cohen provides the soundtrack. Highly recommended.

Price: 2 dishes at around 10 EUR.

Vigtig Per (roughly translates to Important Pete) is a Danish proverb for a person who pretends to be more than he is. It’s also the name of a group of grafitti painters spreading humour in the streets of Aarhus with quirky street poetry (illegally that is. One was busted by the police in 2004). There’s an unknown number of quotes in central Aarhus, so keep you eyes open and you might spot one…
